UPR-NAIC Collaborative Agreement

Paul Goldsmith & Daniel R. Altschuler

We recently met at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Río Piedras campus with the Dean of Academic Affairs, César Cordero, the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Gladys Escalona, and the Chairman of the Physics Department, José Nieves, to sign a collaborative agreement that has been developed over the last few months.

The agreement establishes the position of "adjunct research associate" at the Observatory for UPR faculty whose research areas overlap those of the Observatory. Selected faculty members would be able to spend the summers and other free time working at the Observatory. We would provide them with the same research infrastructure support as is available to our staff research associates. The recent announcement of three tenure-track positions in the Physics Department, to be filled by persons with research interests overlapping those which can be pursued at the Observatory, makes this a timely initiative. Members of our scientific staff will provide the Chairman of the Physics Department with advice when requested.

The Physics Department will accept selected members of our staff as adjunct professors, with the possibilities of giving short courses and summer courses, and supervising UPR students' thesis work. Office space, and access to campus facilities such as the library and computers, will be provided at Río Piedras.

We see this initiative as significantly strengthening and formalizing the research and educational ties between the Observatory and the UPR. The next step would be to establish similar programs with the Physics and Engineering Departments of UPR at Mayagüez.
