NAIC/AO Newsletter, November 19 97
The Arecibo Observatory is located in the karst hills of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. A stimulating research environment is provided by approximately 25 resident staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, as well as over 200 visiting scientists per year. In addition, physics and engineering faculty and students of the University of Puerto Rico have begun a new cooperative research and educational association with the Observatory.
All applicants whose research interests include any field of radio astronomy that can be exploited with the Arecibo telescope will be considered for the positions. However, preference will be given to those actively involved in investigation of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way and external galaxies using the 21-cm spectral line of neutral hydrogen and other atomic and molecular probes, or in the study of pulsars. Besides conducting an independent research program, each on-site staff scientist is expected to advise visiting scientists in all aspects of their observations, and to help define and implement improvements in equipment, observing procedures and data reduction. The successful candidates are also expected to contribute to the ongoing commissioning activities related to the Gregorian upgrade project.
A Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field is required. These staff appointments are initially made for a period of two years. Upon review, a Research Associate may be reappointed for an additional three years, at which time promotion to Senior Research Associate and longer-term reappointment may be considered. Salary and benefits are competitive, attractive and include educational and relocation allowances. Details will depend upon an applicant's qualifications and experience. Please submit the application by February 1, 1998, including a complete resume of academic, professional and personal data, and the names of at least three references, to: The Director, National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center, Cornell University, Space Sciences Building, Ithaca, NY 14853-6801. EOE/AAE. For further information about NAIC and the Arecibo Observatory see http://www.naic.edu.

In addition, physics and engineering faculty and students of the University of Puerto Rico have begun a new cooperative research and educational association with the Observatory.
Candidates will be considered whose research interests include any of the major areas of radio astronomy that can be exploited with the Arecibo telescope. These include pulsar astronomy, VLBI, Galactic and extragalactic spectral-line studies, and continuum radio astronomy. Besides conducting an independent research program, a postdoctoral research associate is expected to help define and implement improvements in equipment, observing procedures and data reduction, and to contribute to the ongoing commissioning activities related to the Gregorian upgrade project.

We will consider applications in all specialized areas of atmospheric research. However, specific areas that we are most interested in reinforcing our capabilities at Arecibo include: studies of the F- and E-region ionosphere and thermosphere utilizing combined incoherent scatter radar and passive optical sensors; resonant laser probing of the mesosphere; active experiments employing the HF facility for ionospheric modification; and high altitude protonospheric investigations using UHF and VHF radars. An experimental background in multiple remote sensing techniques, such as radar and optics, would be advantageous.
Applicants should send a resume including a list of publications, the names of three references, and a plan for research activity that would be conducted at Arecibo. The application deadline is 15 December 1997. These materials should be forwarded to the Office of the Director, NAIC, Cornell University, Space Sciences Building, Ithaca, NY 14853-6801. NAIC is operated by Cornell University under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. EOE/AAE.
