NAIC/AO Newsletter No. 19
José N. Maldonado was recently named Mechanical Engineer of the Year, 1996-97 by the Instituto de Ingenieros Mecánicos del Colegio de Ingenieros y Agrimensores de Puerto Rico. José joined the Observatory as a Mechanical Engineer in 1969, from the local power company, Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica, for which he was the Arecibo Area Superintendent. One year later, he became the Maintenance Department Head and Project Manager for the first Observatory upgrading project. Among his many notable accomplishments was the achievement of a reflector surface smoothness of better than 3.2 mm rms, which the contractor for the first upgrade claimed could not be done. Since 1979, José has been Assistant Director for Facilities and, since 1992, Project Engineer for the Gregorian Upgrade. In addition to the Upgrade, he is also heavily involved in the construction of the Visitor and Educational Facility and the new Optical Laboratory. Congratulations, Maldo.
