Advancing IDEA in Planetary Science

Two Arecibo-focused presentations supporting Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) were given at the Advancing IDEA in Planetary Science virtual conference in April.

The goal of the workshop was to bring together the planetary, astrobiological, and social science communities to (1) lean into lessons learned to date, (2) identify opportunities for improvement by listening to those most impacted in our community, and (3) make recommendations for actionable and tangible measures for advancing IDEA principles within planetary science. Bradly Rivera-Muñiz, a Space Sciences Instructor and Arecibo STAR research mentor, gave a presentation about the Arecibo Observatory STAR Academy called: Supporting Equitable Access to High Quality STEAM Education: Experiences from The Arecibo Observatory’s STAR Academy.

Beth Aponte-Hernandez, a former AO data analyst and research mentor, talked about the STAR program’s predecessor, the Arecibo Observatory Space Academy (AOSA), in a presentation titled: AUTHENTIC PARTNERSHIPS: THE EXPERIENCE OF THE ARECIBO OBSERVATORY SPACE ACADEMY (AOSA)
