GBO/AO Single Dish Observing School (Hybrid) - September 13-21, 2021

Astrophysics

Dear colleagues,
The Green Bank Observatory (GBO) and Arecibo Observatory (AO) are jointly hosting a hybrid in-person/remote Single Dish Observing School and GBT Training Workshop from September 13-21 in Green Bank, West Virginia. Please feel free to pass this message on to any interested colleagues. In-person participants will have the opportunity to tour the 100m Green Bank Telescope and observatory grounds. Because the workshops contain hands-on tutorials and telescope access, we will have limited space available for both in-person and remote participants.
Applications for the workshops will be open from July 1 through August 1, with preference given to graduate students and professional astronomers interested in learning more about single dish radio astronomy. As there are a limited number of spaces available, we will review applications and alert accepted participants in early August. Interested persons can sign up for the GBO/AO Single Dish School, GBT training workshop, or both. While we are unable to pay for travel to the observatory, you will not need to pay for meals or accommodations while you are at the observatory. Vaccinations will be required for any in-person participants to comply with Green Bank's overnight visitor policy.

GBO/AO Single Dish Observing School: September 13-17, 2021

The GBO/AO Single Dish Observing School provides students, post-docs and experts in other fields of astronomy with both knowledge and practical experience of the techniques and applications of single dish radio astronomy. The workshops are based around an intensive series of lectures from experts, as well as hands-on radio astronomy projects and tutorials. Topics that are covered include key science areas for single dish radio telescopes, radio emission properties, fundamentals of radio telescopes and radio frequency instrumentation, observing techniques and strategies, calibration and data processing, and complementary use of single dish and interferometric telescopes.

Green Bank Telescope Training Workshop: September 19-21, 2021
The Green Bank Telescope Training Workshop will provide the essential skills and knowledge needed to use the GBT and maximize its scientific output. It is intended for experienced astronomers who need to learn the specifics of observing with the GBT. After completing the workshop, an attendee will be certified to use the GBT as a remote observer. The workshop will focus on hands-on training in the observing techniques most relevant to participants (e.g. high frequency spectral line, continuum, pulsar, etc.)

This September workshop has been postponed multiple times because of COVID-19 restrictions, and we plan to host our next Single Dish Observing School in Summer 2022. We hope to see you soon! If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact Will Armentrout (warmentr@nrao.edu), Brenne Gregory (bgregory@nrao.edu), and Anish Roshi (aroshi@naic.edu).
